Surgery Before Anesthesia
Before the mid-1800s, surgery was a terrifying ordeal. Patients were held down or strapped to tables while surgeons worked as quickly as possible to minimize suffering. Alcohol and opium offered limited relief, and many patients died from shock or infection. Speed was prized above all else in surgery, and the idea of a long, careful operation was simply impossible. Everything changed on October 16, 1846, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, when dentist William Morton demonstrated the use of ether as a general anesthetic during a surgery to remove a tumor from a patient's jaw. The patient remained unconscious and reported feeling no pain.
The Discovery of Ether's Power
Ether had been known since the 1500s and was sometimes used recreationally at social gatherings called "ether frolics." It was Crawford Long, a Georgia physician, who first used ether in surgery in 1842, but he did not publish his findings. Morton, working independently, conducted experiments with ether on animals and himself before the famous 1846 demonstration. Surgeon John Collins Warren, who performed the operation, reportedly said afterward, "Gentlemen, this is no humbug." The news spread rapidly across the world. Within months, surgeons in Europe were using ether, and the era of modern surgery had begun.
How Anesthesia Changed Everything
General anesthesia allowed surgeons to take their time, work more precisely, and attempt procedures that had previously been unthinkable. Chloroform became an alternative to ether in 1847, and over the following decades, anesthesiology grew into its own medical specialty. Today, anesthesiologists use a sophisticated combination of drugs to keep patients unconscious, pain-free, and stable during complex procedures lasting many hours. Modern anesthesia is extraordinarily safe compared to its early days. The 1846 demonstration at Massachusetts General Hospital, known as the "Ether Dome," is now commemorated as one of medicine's most important moments.
