Who Uses the Months Ago Calculator?
Monthly and annual billing cycles, free-trial anniversary dates, and renewal windows all hinge on calendar months. Quick links: 1 month ago, 3 months ago, 12 months ago.
Residential and commercial leases run in calendar months. 6-month, 12-month, and 18-month lease start and end dates are the most common lookups for landlords, tenants, and agents.
Month-over-month and quarter-over-quarter comparisons require knowing the exact calendar date one, three, or twelve months ago. For exact-day calculations, see the Days Ago calculator.
Probation periods, contract notice periods, and benefit eligibility windows are often defined in calendar months. A 3-month probation ending on March 31 started on December 31, not 90 days earlier. See 3 Months Ago.
How the Months Ago Calculator Works
The calculator rolls back the date by the specified number of calendar months. If the resulting month has fewer days than the current day of the month, it clamps to the last valid day. For example, 1 month before March 31 returns February 28 (or 29 in a leap year). This matches how banks, landlords, and subscription services calculate monthly anniversaries.

Month-End Edge Cases Explained
Months have different lengths, which creates edge cases when rolling back. Here is how the calculator handles the most common ones:
- ▸ 1 month before March 31: February 28 (or 29 in a leap year)
- ▸ 1 month before May 31: April 30
- ▸ 1 month before July 31: June 30
- ▸ 2 months before March 31: January 31
- ▸ 12 months before February 29 (leap year): February 28 (non-leap year)
Months Ago vs. Days Ago: Choosing the Right Tool
Use months-ago when the reference period follows the calendar: subscriptions that renew on the same day each month, leases that start and end on named dates, or financial quarters aligned with January, April, July, and October. Use the Days Ago calculator when the period is defined by an exact number of days: 30-day notice periods, 90-day warranties, or SLA windows.
