Enemies at the Negotiating Table

In September 1978, U.S. President Jimmy Carter brought together Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin for thirteen days of secret negotiations at Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains. Egypt and Israel had fought four wars in thirty years. Direct peace talks between them had seemed impossible. Carter threw himself into the negotiations with extraordinary personal commitment, shuttling between the two leaders' cabins and drafting compromise language late into the night. At several points the talks nearly collapsed, and Begin came close to leaving.

A Framework for Peace

On September 17, 1978, Carter, Sadat, and Begin emerged from Camp David with two framework agreements. The first outlined a path toward a formal peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. The second proposed a framework for autonomy for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza — though this second framework was never fully implemented. The peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was signed at the White House on March 26, 1979. Under its terms, Israel withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula it had captured in 1967, and Egypt recognized Israel's right to exist — the first Arab nation to do so.

Consequences and Legacy

The Camp David Accords were a major diplomatic achievement. Sadat and Begin were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. The Egypt-Israel peace has held for over four decades, surviving multiple regional wars and upheavals. However, Sadat paid a heavy personal price — he was assassinated by Egyptian militants who saw the treaty as a betrayal in October 1981. The accords did not resolve the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the framework for Palestinian autonomy was never implemented. They remain a model of what patient personal diplomacy can sometimes achieve. The Good Friday Agreement is another landmark peace deal worth comparing.
