Reviving an Ancient Tradition
The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, from April 6 to 15, 1896. The games were organized by the International Olympic Committee, founded by French educator Pierre de Coubertin, who had long championed the idea of reviving the ancient Greek athletic competitions as a way to promote international peace and friendship through sport. The ancient Olympics had been held at Olympia in Greece for over a thousand years before being abolished by Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 393 AD. The 1896 games attracted athletes from 14 nations, though most were European and American. About 241 male athletes competed — women were excluded from competition.
What Happened in Athens
The 1896 Athens Olympics featured 43 events across nine sports, including athletics (track and field), cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. The ancient Panathenaic Stadium was restored to host the games, and it remains in use today. An American, James Connolly, became the first Olympic champion of the modern era by winning the triple jump on the opening day. The marathon race — run from the town of Marathon to Athens, a route of about 25 miles commemorating an ancient Greek messenger's run — was won by a Greek water carrier named Spyridon Louis, to enormous local celebration.
A Movement That Grew Beyond Anyone's Expectations
The early Olympics were modest by today's standards, but they established principles and a format that have endured for over a century. The modern Summer Olympics now attract athletes from nearly every country on Earth, with thousands of competitors across dozens of sports. The Winter Olympics, the Paralympic Games, and the Youth Olympics all grew from the same seed planted in Athens in 1896. De Coubertin's vision of sport as a vehicle for international understanding has been imperfectly realized, with politics and boycotts often intruding, but the games remain one of the most powerful global events that humanity stages.
