The Impossible Solo

On August 20, 1980, Reinhold Messner of Italy reached the summit of Mount Everest — alone and without supplemental oxygen. It was the first solo ascent of Everest and the first by a single climber without bottled oxygen. Messner had already become the first person to climb Everest without oxygen in 1978, alongside Peter Habeler. The 1980 solo was in a different category entirely. He climbed a new route, up the North Face from Tibet, during the monsoon season — when most climbers do not even attempt Everest. The summit push from his high camp took three days, during which he filmed and photographed himself on one of the world's most dangerous mountains, utterly alone.

What No Oxygen Actually Means

At 8,849 meters (29,032 feet), Everest's summit sits in what climbers call the Death Zone — where the oxygen level is so low that the human body deteriorates faster than it can recover. Most climbers use supplemental oxygen above 7,000 meters to maintain mental clarity and physical function. Without it, hallucinations, extreme exhaustion, and impaired judgment are serious risks. Messner described moving just a few steps before having to rest, his world reduced to placing one foot in front of the other. His 1978 climb with Habeler had shattered the belief that humans physically could not reach the summit without oxygen — the 1980 solo went even further.

Messner's Place in Mountaineering History

Reinhold Messner went on to climb all 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 meters — all without supplemental oxygen — completing that quest in 1986. His approach emphasized alpine style: small teams, minimal equipment, speed and self-reliance rather than fixed ropes and large support expeditions. He transformed how the mountaineering world thought about what was possible. The 1980 Everest solo remains one of the most extraordinary individual athletic achievements in human history — a feat of physical endurance, mental toughness, and acceptance of risk that has never been fully replicated in the same style.
