A Teenager Takes the World Stage

At the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, a 17-year-old Brazilian named Edson Arantes do Nascimento — known to the world as Pelé — became the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final and the youngest to win a World Cup medal. Pelé had joined the Brazilian squad as a teenager and became the tournament's standout player. He scored six goals in four games, including a hat-trick in the semifinal against France and two goals in the final against Sweden as Brazil won 5-2. When Brazil's victory was secured, Pelé wept on the pitch and had to be held up by teammates, overwhelmed by emotion.

A Career of Records

Pelé went on to win two more World Cups with Brazil, in 1962 and 1970, making him the only player in history to win three World Cup titles. Over a club career spent mostly at Santos in Brazil, he scored over 600 official goals and became the face of football worldwide. He was so beloved that warring factions in a Nigerian civil war reportedly agreed to a temporary ceasefire so they could watch him play in an exhibition match in Lagos. Pelé helped popularize football in the United States when he joined the New York Cosmos in the late 1970s, drawing massive crowds to a sport that had previously struggled for attention in North America.

The Standard of Greatness

Debate about the greatest footballer of all time typically centers on Pelé and a small group of modern players. What sets Pelé apart is the combination of his statistics, his World Cup record, and the testimony of those who watched him play. Opponents, teammates, and coaches across multiple generations described him as something beyond ordinary talent — as if he were playing a slightly different game than everyone else on the pitch. He received the FIFA Player of the Century award alongside Diego Maradona. When Pelé died in December 2022, Brazil declared three days of national mourning. His 1958 World Cup debut remains the moment the world first glimpsed what he would become.
